THE 8 LIMBS OF YOGA: NIYAMA

This week we look at the second limb of Patanjali’s eight-limbed yoga path which contains the five internal practices of the Niyamas (observances). These practices extend the ethical codes of conduct provided in his first limb, the Yamas, to the practicing yogi’s internal environment of body, mind, and spirit.

The practice of Niyama helps us maintain a positive foundation in which to thrive and gives us the self-discipline, humility, and inner-strength necessary to progress along the yoga journey. They speak to the gross aspects of our being with Saucha (cleanliness) to Ishvara Pranidhana (merging with source).

In practice this week we’ll help cultivate a conducive environment inside to call in these aspects and give ourselves a better chance of walking a smoother path. We hope to see you on the mat!
