THE 8 LIMBS OF YOGA: PRANAYAMA
Breath and mind are intimately connected. The quality of our breath is a direct reflection of our life or how we think. As we begin to consciously shape our breath, the mind has no choice but to follow. To maintain the conscious hold of the breath, the mind must remain present.
On a deeper level, pranayama helps subconscious mental patterns associated with past experiences to transform. This allows us to respond to the present moment more fully and authentically.
Even though Pranayama influences us on many levels, it is predominately about our relationship to the present moment.
We breathe both consciously and unconsciously. By taking more control of the breath, we can leverage access to the deeper and more hidden parts of the mind. This also gives us the ability to shift between nervous systems.
Mind and breath always move together, however breath (Prana) is more dense and tangible than mind, making it easier to control. Knowing how to use the breath in these various ways allows us to create very specific and dependable results during our practice.
In practice this week, we will invite you to become more aware of your breath and how you feel in relation to that. We look forward to seeing you on the mat online tomorrow and then in-studio on Wednesday!
