CONTAIN AND PURIFY

The Power of Containment in Yoga: Exploring Jalandhara Bandha, Mula Bandha, and Vyana Vayu

In yoga, we often think about movement and flow, but equally important is our ability to contain and direct energy. Containment isn’t about restriction—it’s about harnessing Prana (life force) in a conscious way so it can serve our practice, rather than scatter our attention.

As we become more sensitive to energy, we also become more skilled at building, shaping, and directing it—and just as importantly, learning how and where not to leak it. This takes great intention and the use of subtle inner techniques, which help develop our energetic awareness. Over time, we also gain the ability to refine and purify the quality of our Prana.

Two key tools for this are Jalandhara Bandha and Mula Bandha—energetic locks that are part physical, part mental.

Jalandhara Bandha, sometimes called the throat lock, is traditionally translated as “stop the stream.” When applied with awareness, it helps prevent Prana from rushing upward and overwhelming the mind. It settles mental activity, creating a quieter space for concentration and introspection. Practically speaking, it helps gather energy in the heart space, making it easier for the mind to rest there during breath-work or meditation.

Mula Bandha, the root lock, acts as a strong anchor for the mind. With consistent practice, this subtle engagement helps refine the movement of Prana from the base of the spine upward. It's not just about activation—it’s about the timing, control, and release of energy, which supports inner clarity and steadiness over time.

Both bandhas work hand-in-hand with Vyana Vayu, the pranic force responsible for circulation and integration. When Vyana is balanced, it supports the even distribution of energy throughout the system, helping us feel more connected, centered, and less affected by external pressures. It also helps link together different areas of our practice—physical, mental, and energetic—so we can feel more cohesive and whole.

Rather than viewing containment as something that holds us back, we can understand it as a way of focusing energy with intention. Through the intelligent use of Jalandhara Bandha and Mula Bandha, supported by Vyana Vayu, we create a steady inner environment—one that supports deeper meditation, breath-work, and self-awareness.
