THE TANTRIC YAMAS & NIYAMAS: MITAHARA
In practice of Mitahara, yogis strive to keep the stomach one-fourth empty of food at mealtime. It is believed that this allows sufficient room for healthy digestion. Those with a spiritual practice may wish to offer food to the Divine before consumption as an additional custom of Mitahara.
As well as this, there is the whole debate about the ethics of eating meat products or not. Regardless of what type of food you ingest, there are further layers of awareness to consider. Is the food organic? Clean of sprayed poisons? Is the food genetically modified? Is your water filtered? So many things to consider.
Apart from food, we need to have another conversation around what else are we ingesting. Who are we hanging around, what influence are they having on us? What information are you taking in? Are you watching or reading mainstream news?
If we don’t question what’s on offer, we’ll settle for what’s in front of us. The more toxicity we have, the more murkiness and lack of clarity that’s there, the less agency available and desire to ask deeper questions. We take ourselves down a dark rabbit hole towards illness and self destruction.
Each and every little single thing may not seem like a lot, but collectively over a long period of time it sure makes a difference. As questions pop up, allow yourself to be open to investigate. Don’t be afraid to shift one little thing at a time. Keep listening to what your higher self is saying and do what feels best, not what you think is best for you.
